Run this before you send a Division 04 submittal package.

## 1. Before you start

- [ ] Pull the exact spec section this package answers to, including addenda that changed it.
- [ ] Read the submittal articles in Part 1 and list every item they ask for.
- [ ] Confirm the transmittal names the right section number, and that each product is tagged to the paragraph it answers.
- [ ] Mark any deviation from the spec yourself on the transmittal. A declared deviation gets reviewed; a hidden one gets the package rejected.
- [ ] Keep a copy of exactly what you sent, with the date, for your submittal log.

## 2. Named manufacturers and products match the spec (default grade: Blocker)

Compare every product in the package to the manufacturer and model the spec names. If anything differs, attach the approved substitution or or-equal letter, or swap back before you send. Tick each item once you have checked it and nothing below applies without written approval.

- [ ] CMU manufacturer substitutions (Oldcastle/CRH, Basalite, Angelus Block, Trenwyth, QUIKRETE)
- [ ] Brick manufacturer substitutions (Boral, General Shale, Acme Brick, Glen-Gery, Endicott)
- [ ] Natural stone supplier changes (quarry source matters for color and physical properties)
- [ ] Cast stone manufacturer substitutions (Arriscraft, Indiana Limestone, US Precast)
- [ ] Mortar manufacturer substitutions (Spec Mix, Quikrete, Lehigh Hanson, US Mix)
- [ ] Masonry accessory substitutions for ties, anchors, flashing (Hohmann & Barnard, Wire-Bond, Blok-Lok, Heckmann)
- [ ] Through-wall flashing manufacturer changes (Sandell, Mortar Net, Hohmann & Barnard)
- [ ] Masonry sealer/repellent manufacturer changes (Prosoco, Sikagard, Sto)

## 3. Performance values meet the spec numbers (default grade: Blocker)

Put the data sheet next to the spec and compare the actual values, not just the test method. A sheet that says "tested per ASTM" without the number is not proof. Tick each value once it meets or beats the spec.

- [ ] **CMU compressive strength** (f'm prism strength, unit strength per ASTM C90: typically 1900-3000 psi for load-bearing)
- [ ] **CMU weight class** (normal weight ~135 pcf, medium weight ~105-125 pcf, lightweight ~85-105 pcf)
- [ ] **CMU moisture content** (Type I moisture-controlled vs Type II non-moisture-controlled)
- [ ] **Brick compressive strength** (psi per ASTM C62, C216, or C652)
- [ ] **Brick absorption rate** (% per ASTM C67, affects bond and freeze-thaw durability)
- [ ] **Brick grade** (SW Severe Weathering, MW Moderate Weathering per ASTM C62/C216)
- [ ] **Mortar type** (M, S, N, O per ASTM C270 - property vs proportion specification)
- [ ] **Grout strength** (f'g psi at 28 days per ASTM C476)
- [ ] **Reinforcing steel grade** (Grade 60 per ASTM A615/A706)
- [ ] **Stone flexural strength** (modulus of rupture per ASTM C99/C880)
- [ ] **Stone absorption rate** (% per ASTM C97)
- [ ] **Fire rating** of masonry assembly (hours per UL/WHI listing or calculated per TMS 216)
- [ ] **STC rating** of masonry assembly
- [ ] **Thermal resistance** (R-value of insulated masonry assembly)

## 4. Certifications and test reports are attached (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

Reviewers want the report itself, not a line on the data sheet saying one exists. Tick each document that the spec requires and the package actually contains. Skip lines that do not apply to your section.

- [ ] **TMS 402/602** compliance (Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures)
- [ ] **ASTM C90** test reports for concrete masonry units (compressive strength, absorption, moisture content)
- [ ] **ASTM C62/C216/C652** test reports for brick (compressive strength, absorption, saturation coefficient, IRA)
- [ ] **ASTM C270** mortar compliance (property or proportion method)
- [ ] **ASTM C476** grout compliance
- [ ] **ASTM C1019** grout prism test reports
- [ ] **Mill certificates** for masonry reinforcing steel
- [ ] **Fire resistance documentation** (UL assembly listing or TMS 216.1 calculated rating)
- [ ] **Seismic compliance** documentation (IBC/ASCE 7, TMS 402 seismic provisions)
- [ ] **ASTM C97/C99/C170/C880** test reports for natural stone (absorption, flexural, compressive)
- [ ] **LEED documentation** (recycled content for CMU, regional materials)
- [ ] **Efflorescence test results** (ASTM C67 for brick, ASTM C1372 for CMU)

## 5. Colors, finishes, and profiles match the selection (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

Match each visible attribute to the spec text and the architect's approved sample or color schedule. Tick each one you have confirmed.

- [ ] CMU color, texture, and surface finish (smooth, split-face, scored, ground-face, burnished, fluted)
- [ ] Brick color, texture, size, and coursing pattern (running bond, stack bond, Flemish bond)
- [ ] Natural stone color, finish (polished, honed, thermal/flamed, bush-hammered, sandblasted), and veining
- [ ] Cast stone color match to natural stone
- [ ] Mortar joint color (natural, colored to match/contrast)
- [ ] Mortar joint profile (concave, V-joint, raked, weathered, flush)
- [ ] Control joint and expansion joint sealant color

## 6. Details and installation match the spec and drawings (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

These are the mismatches reviewers catch most in this division. Check your shop drawings and installation data against the spec and the contract drawings, and tick each line once you have confirmed it does not apply to your package.

- [ ] **Bond pattern** differs from drawings (running bond vs stack bond vs other)
- [ ] **Mortar joint thickness** differs from spec (typically 3/8" for CMU, 3/8" for brick)
- [ ] **Reinforcing bar size or spacing** differs from structural drawings
- [ ] **Grout pour height** or lift height exceeds TMS 602 limits
- [ ] **Wall tie type or spacing** differs (adjustable vs non-adjustable, horizontal/vertical spacing)
- [ ] **Through-wall flashing** type or termination detail differs
- [ ] **Weep hole spacing** or type differs (open head joint, wicks, tubes)
- [ ] **Control joint spacing** differs from spec or structural drawings
- [ ] **Expansion joint location** differs (critical for brick to accommodate thermal movement)
- [ ] **Lintel size or bearing length** differs from structural design
- [ ] **Shelf angle location or size** differs
- [ ] **Veneer anchor type or embedment** differs

## 7. Every required item is in the package (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

Open the submittal articles in Part 1 of your spec section (often split into action and informational submittals) and confirm each required item is present. The list below is what this division's specs most often require.

- [ ] CMU product data with ASTM C90 test results
- [ ] Brick samples and product data with ASTM C216 test results
- [ ] Natural stone samples with ASTM test results (C97, C99, C170, C880)
- [ ] Mortar mix design or product data per ASTM C270
- [ ] Grout mix design per ASTM C476
- [ ] Masonry reinforcing steel mill certificates
- [ ] Wall tie and anchor product data with pull-out test results
- [ ] Through-wall flashing product data and installation details
- [ ] Shop drawings for reinforced masonry (bar placement, grouting plan)
- [ ] Stone cladding shop drawings with anchorage details
- [ ] Cast stone shop drawings with joint layout
- [ ] Masonry prism test plan (f'm testing per ASTM C1314)
- [ ] Sealer/repellent product data and mock-up plan
